Working the Flipped Classroom and Inspired by NPR

Well here it is. It is quirky and weird to see myself. Anyway, I did become very familiar with iMovie and annotations in YouTube:) So it is about 8 minutes of me discussing the new project. After reading chapter 5 from Personal Learning Connections I felt the authors call to action, but I wasn't sure if everyone is quite on board yet. So, inspired by NPR's This I Believe series. I decided to take our video part of the course and turn it into a visual essay and incorporate it into our final exam. So watch the video. After watching, please visit the following links and listen to at least 3 essays. Then in the comment section of this blog please leave questions, comments, fears, ideas, constructive criticisms, and just plain encouragement for my risk taking.

  1. Are we going to be memoizing our whole essay for the video?

    1. This is my fear as well. I feel like since it is 3-5 minutes long it is going to get very boring reading word for word but at the same time that would be a lot to memorize.

  2. Ok first off, I couldn't listen to the I believe statements using Firefox, but they did would with Internet explorer. I just wanted to mention that in case anyone else had the same problem.
I also thank you for getting rid of the tech aspect of the project. It would really limit what I believe. Technology is not why I want to teach. The video aspect of this project makes me very nervous, but we'll see. Now let's see what I believe.

  3. Thanks Kim for the update on Firefox. @Alyssa I don't forsee memorizing your essay. A visual essay implies various things. I think it would be boring to just video tape your essay. We are going to use iMovie that has a lot of possibilities.

  4. Did you ever use iMovie prior to this project? The editing was done really well! I'm not good at that kind of stuff so I'm kind of afraid of using it for my own project. Maybe a "get to know iMvie" class one day?

  5. BryannaBuj has left a new comment on your post "Working the Flipped Classroom and Inspired by NPR":

Will this project mostly be done in class so that we can work with Imovie as well? Or can we use other projects to devote more time to it? Also, you may have mentioned this already, but we do this work solo, right? I think it actually gives a new spin on original tests and finals as well. I am not too enthusiastic, but I would still like to walk away from this class experimenting more with such tools like Imovie and even audacity, plus, I feel interested in the flipped classroom ideas.

    1. I will give you ample time in class to work with iMovie. This is an individual project. I like your sense of adventure as we approach this project.

  6. I guess my main fear is having enough time to work on the video part of it. Since you took tech our of the eassay and its now about our experinces on education, learning and teaching? And what we beleive in these areas?

  7. I really liked how this flipped lesson worked. We're coming to class on Tuesday knowing what to expect from this project and can be ready to ask questions. This will save a lot of class time! I've never used iMovie before so I am interested to see what it is like.

  8. I thought the video was good considering it was your first time doing it. I do not like writing therefor I am not excited about this visual essay assighnment. My biggest fear would be learning how to use iMovie because I never used it before.

    1. Looks like you may have a great growth opportunity ahead of you. As a teacher, no matter what subject you will have to teach writing. Let's do this together. Make sure you review a lot of the essays.

  9. Not familiar with Mac, I'd really like to use something from Microsoft. Working on this project at home would be more convenient, is there an equivelent tool that you can recommended found on PC? If not I'm sure I can figure it out.

    1. I will not restrict your choice of Mac or Pc. But I always try to grow by moving outside my comfort zone. Your choice.

  10. I am a little bit afraid to take on this project, just because it is so out of my comfort zone. However, I think if we all learn what to do as a group it will help me improve my individual project, and could end up being a very cool new twist on an essay.

  11. Thanks for making the Tech aspect optional. I got kinda anxious about what I would do about that, but now I am more sure. This was great! We know what to expect when we come in tomorrow and be ready with questions instead of you telling us in class and getting blank stares or something. :)

  12. I love that were taking a risk on doing this type of project. It will be interesting to see everyones viewpoint of it. I'm excited to learn more about a visual essay but also a little nervous. We will see how this goes.

  13. I was quick to judge a flipped classroom but I really enjoyed this! I definitely could see myself using this in my classroom! I feel like we'll all be on the same page come Tuesday! I'm really nervous about this project but it will be a nice challenge!

  15. I like the idea of a "flipped classroom" now, I wasn't so sure in the beginning but I'm beginning to like it! I'm also really excited to do this project, it's something brand new to me. I'm excited to learn how to do it. I have used iMovie before.

  16. I really Like the idea of the I believe website. However, I am and scared of doing this project...when you say visual essy do you mean we record ourslves or record our voices? I like the thought bubble comming out of your head at 5.55

  17. Nice! At first I couldnt watch it directly from the blog, but when I double clicked on the video it linked me to youtube and it played great from there. Now it works just fine from the blog. Dunno why it wouldnt work. I like the idea for our final exam, I cant wait to start...iMovie is a sweet program!

  18. A little confused, but i think i have the general idea. I did like how you wrapped everything up in the end though that was a huge help. I am still not to keen on the "flipped classroom," but i'm here to learn, challenges and all.
